Let’s be honest, sometimes technology feels like it’s out to get us. My launch day? Podia decided to take a vacation. Website down? More like website MIA for, well….who can even remember at this point (4 days? 5 days?).
When Things Get Hard in Business …
And just when you think tech trouble can’t get worse, they do.
Today’s adventure? Creating a new PayPal business account to accept a payment, only to have it locked and totally shut down on day one for “fraudulent activity.”
And let’s not even talk about their “180 days to access the funds” policy! Seriously, PayPal!?!?
Three minutes of righteous anger. Then? I moved on. Had a super productive day instead.
The Secret to Being an Entrepreneur
Does that surprise you? It does to me. I used to COMPLETELY spiral when things like that stacked up one after the next after the next.
But here’s the thing: as an entrepreneur, I’ve spent the last two decades surrounded by small business owners. The ones who thrived, the ones who crashed – I’ve seen it all. And you know what separates the most successful ones? Grit.
Yes, tech frustration is enough to make you want to scream. I don’t know anyone who had a massive tech-tool failure in day one of their launch, their website down for 4-5 days, AND PayPal going AWOL all within 6 days. I spent sooooo much time trying to trouble shoot these areas… time I didn’t have.
But here’s the thing. We can’t let frustration or anger control our business or our outlook. No one wants issue after issue. None of us have time to be on the phone for hours with tech support. We’re busy and are trying to run businesses here! But grit is what allows us to dig in, dust ourselves off, and keep moving forward, no matter what life (or tech) throws our way.
It sounds crazy but I have seen many entrepreneurs give us soooo easily when things didn’t go their way. It seems to happen when there is a “stacking” of bad things on top of each other.
But I wonder: if they hadn’t thrown in the towel, where would they be today?
So, how’s your “grit” muscle?
I believe it’s one of the strongest predictors of entrepreneurial success. And the best way to strengthen it is, when things go wrong, digging in and having a can’t quit, won’t quit attitude.
